Sight Words are words every reader should recognize by sight. When applied to early reading instruction, it may also pertain to the set of words that keeps reappearing in almost any page of text. Some examples of sight words include the words "the, their, does and always." In addition to its high frequency, many of these words cannot be sounded out. Children are expected to learn these words by sight or just by looking and recognizing them without any attempt to decode or sound.
Here are just some basic sight words categorized into different levels of difficulty. These Basic Sight Words charts can be used in reading drills for emergent or beginning readers.
