Eight Parts of Speech Flashcards

What are the Eight Parts of Speech?

There are eight parts of speech in the English language. These are noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction, and interjection.

The part of speech indicates how the word functions in meaning as well as grammatically within the sentence. An individual word can function as more than one part of speech when used in different circumstances. Understanding parts of speech is essential for determining its correct usage.

Here the Eight Parts of Speech, their definition and some examples.

1. Adjective - describes a noun or a pronoun. Examples are big, pretty and wild.
2. Verb - expresses action or state of being. Examples are jump, sing and dance.
3. Noun - name of a person, place, thing and event. Examples are baby, cat, pen and school.
4. Pronoun - a word used in place of a noun. Examples are I, you, he, she it, me, them.
5. Adverb - modifies a verb, an adjective or another adverb. Examples are gently, quietly and carefully.
6. Conjunction - a  word that joins words, phrases and clauses. Examples are and, but and while.
