Word families are groups of words that have a common feature or pattern – they have the same combinations of letters in them and a similar sound.
Check out this words family of -ar, -er, -ir, -or and -ur. Read them aloud and use them as reading chats for your
reading practice drills.
Word Family -ar:
harp, barn, cards, farm, car, bar, far
Word Family -er:
her, germ, term, hammer, paper, tiger
Word Family -ir:
shirt, skirt, dirt, girl, bird, third
Word Family -or:
storm, sword, sport, torch, porch
Word Family -ur:
ur - purple, turkey, spurt, purse, nurse, church
